Entrepreneurship and Empowerment in South Africa
The Entrepreneurship and Empowerment in South Africa (EESA) is a 4-credit, 6-week summer study abroad program in South Africa, and is a partnership between the University of Notre Dame, University of Florida, the University of Colorado, and the University of the Western Cape. The program is for highly motivated students who want to be agents of change. It provides a life-changing experience that enables students to help historically disadvantaged entrepreneurs in the townships around Cape Town, South Africa. Coached by four faculty members, American students collaborate with South African students on consulting teams, assisting small businesses over a six-week period to help make their ventures sustainable. Ventures range from catering and arts & crafts businesses to community newspapers and small construction companies.

Global Research Experience
This one-credit, eight-week research experience program is an opportunity for students to engage in research in areas and themes on Poverty, Democracy, and Global Health. The program offers undergraduate students an international research learning opportunity to discover firsthand within an immersive environment in selected locations throughout the world. Participants will engage in hands-on research projects alongside local experts, gaining valuable insights and skills in their chosen field. This program not only fosters academic growth but also promotes cultural exchange and personal development, providing students with a comprehensive understanding of their subject in an international context. The Global Research Experience Program places students with selected organizations in Chile, Kenya, Mexico, and Taiwan.

South Africa Summer: Othering & Apartheid
This 3-week intensive program incorporates cultural, intellectual and personal experiences to allow for meaningful engagement with the issues that often make interactions with differing others in our pluralistic world difficult - even ultimately leading to systems of oppression such as apartheid.
The course "Negative Attitudes: A Cultural, Historical, and Social Psychological Analysis of Racism in South Africa" introduces you to the country of South Africa and the system of apartheid from a historical, cultural and personal perspective. Through the course readings, in-class discussions, and cultural excursions, you will gain a deep understanding of the role that individual judgments that people make of those who are different from them, 'others' them in a way that forms the basis of such systems of oppression.
Cultural activities and excursions in Johannesburg and Cape Town will include Soweto, the Apartheid Museum, the Hector Pieterson Memorial, Robben Island, the District Six Museum.

Uganda Summer: Religion, Peace & Development
The Religion, Peace and Development is a 3 week study abroad program in Uganda which offers students a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the cultural, religious, social, and economic realities of Uganda. Led by Ugandan native, Fr. Emmanuel Katongole, students will experience the beauty, wildlife, rich culture, and a “taste” of many of the other gifts from the “Pearl of Africa.” Through this program, students will gain a deeper understanding of the factors and histories that shape life on the African continent, more specifically the intersectionality between religion, peace and development. This is done through community engagement and service learning opportunities with the Bethany Land Institute’s programs focused on sustainable agriculture, ecological restoration and economic transformation of rural communities. Through this program, students have the opportunity to discover interesting themes and topics for possible future research.
