Research Funding Opportunities

Notre Dame supports faculty research and student engagement in sub-Saharan Africa through funding and networking opportunities. Notre Dame Nairobi provides a platform for scholars to connect with local institutions and collaborate on regionally relevant projects.

Funding Opportunities

  • Global Dissertation Grants Program: This grant program supports Notre Dame Ph.D. researchers in either the development stages of their dissertation seeking to add a global dimension, or those in more advanced stages who already have a core global component/focus to their dissertation and wish to broaden and deepen this.
  • International Research Travel Grant: The goal of this grant is to act as a catalyst for international research collaborations by funding Notre Dame faculty to explore, develop, or advance long-term research collaborations. Funds can be used to cover travel expenses for individual faculty.
  • Sub-Saharan Africa Guest Scholar/Artist Partnership Program: The goal of this partnership program is to support a Notre Dame faculty member to partner with on-campus unit (center/institute/department) in bringing to Notre Dame guest scholars and artists from sub-Saharan Africa with outstanding reputations in their field. During the visit, the guest scholar/artist would pursue their own research/art in collaboration with an ND faculty researcher/artist and discuss/plan future collaborations, all while engaging in the intellectual/artistic life and community at Notre Dame.
  • Sub-Saharan Africa Research Collaboration Grant: This grant program supports the University of Notre Dame's broader strategy to promote academic cooperation in sub-Saharan Africa by building, sustaining, and encouraging new and existing partnerships and opportunities for research collaboration and scholarly exchanges with universities in sub-Saharan Africa.
  • Sub-Saharan Africa Research Development Grant: This grant focuses on collaborations in sub-Saharan Africa by providing travel support in two ways: 1) Supporting a joint visit of a faculty “mentor” who wishes to introduce a respected colleague to an esteemed colleague/institution in sub-Sahara Africa with a view to developing a long-term collaboration; 2) Supporting an existing faculty-to faculty collaboration in a way that promises a significant advance in establishing or deepening a joint research project.
